In the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, far from the noise of the traditional music industry hubs of the European landscape, Daft Music Studios has spent the past decade quietly reshaping what a recording studio can be. What began as an ambitious, almost improbable idea, part high-end recording facility, part design-led hospitality concept, has evolved into one of Europe’s most distinctive creative destinations. Now, as Daft celebrates its 10th anniversary, its influence extends well beyond music production, positioning it at the intersection of culture, experience, and creative ecosystems.

A Studio Concept Reimagined
Founders Tine Blondeel and Stijn Verdonckt set out to build something radically different: a hybrid model combining residential recording studios with a fully integrated hotel experience.
Set within the Ardenne forest, Daft was designed not simply as a place to record, but as a space to live, create, and disconnect. Writing, rehearsals, recording, mixing, film scoring, and even visual production all coexist within a single environment, supported by accommodation, food, and a deliberately relaxed atmosphere.
This “home away from home” philosophy has become central to its identity. Artists are not just clients; they are residents, immersed in a setting built to nurture creativity without the pressures of urban studio timelines.
Built for Sound, Designed for Experience
While the concept is experiential, the technical ambition is uncompromising. Daft’s main recording space ranks among the largest in Europe, designed to capture everything from intimate sessions to orchestral compositions.
High-end analogue equipment, including a flagship Neve console, anchors the studio’s sonic capabilities, ensuring that creative freedom is matched by world-class production quality. But what truly differentiates Daft is its balance between precision and atmosphere.
The architecture, interiors, and surrounding landscape are not secondary, they are integral to the creative process. The studio becomes less of a workplace and more of an environment for sustained artistic immersion.

More Than a Studio: A Creative Destination
What sets Daft apart is not only its technical capability, but its holistic approach to creativity.
The site has evolved into an “inspiring bubble”, a hybrid environment where music production, hospitality, and lifestyle converge. The Daft Hotel extends the studio experience into a boutique stay, where guests and artists share spaces that include a home cinema and even a heated pool with underwater music.
Outside, a 5,000 m² garden transforms into a seasonal creative landscape, featuring glamping tipis, open-fire gastronomy, and intimate live sessions. This integration of nature, design, and production reflects a broader shift in the industry: creativity thrives in environments designed for immersion, not just efficiency.
Major brands such as the BMW Group, Pepsi Max, and Deloitte have also embraced the site, using it for launches and creative activations, expanding Daft’s role beyond music into a multidisciplinary platform.
Built for Global Music Production
Over the past decade, Daft has grown into an international benchmark, attracting top-tier talent from across the global music industry.
In 2025 alone, the studios hosted a team of Los Angeles-based songwriters working with artists like Dua Lipa, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Shakira, and David Guetta. Its “wall of fame” reflects both international reach and strong Belgian roots, with artists including Selah Sue, Loïc Nottet, Roméo Elvis, Zwangere Guy, Lous and the Yakuza, Amenra, PNL, and Hooverphonic.
Beyond artists, the studios have welcomed world-class engineers such as Michael Romanowski and Tony Platt, while even Michel Legrand contributed to film scoring work connected to the legacy of Orson Welles. From streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ to global entertainment brands like Tomorrowland, Daft has become a key node in contemporary audiovisual production.
Its true contribution lies in how it has redefined the conditions of creation. By removing artists from conventional studio environments and placing them in a setting that prioritizes time, focus, and well-being, Daft has helped shift industry expectations, demonstrating that creativity thrives in the context.

From Legacy to Reinvention: A Belgian Success Story
Daft’s story does not begin in 2016. Its roots trace back to Studio Katy in 1969, a space that hosted icons like Marvin Gaye, where he recorded his final album Midnight Love, alongside figures like Patrick Hernandez and Toots Thielemans.Over time, the studio evolved into GAM & La Chapelle Studios before entering a new chapter in 2008.
That transformation was led by Stijn Verdonckt, who began his journey there as a “coffee boy” before taking over operations. Together with Tine Blondeel, he envisioned something far more ambitious: a next-generation recording complex.
In 2016, that vision materialized in Malmedy, with the construction of Daft Music Studios, one of the largest and most advanced recording environments in Europe, with the support of Noshaq.

From the Ardennes to London: Belgium on the Global Stage
As it celebrates this milestone, Daft is also extending its presence internationally.
On June 2nd, 2026, the studio will be featured at the Belgium House, taking place at the same time as SXSW London, hosted at the Shoreditch Arts Club. This moment places Daft within a broader narrative of Belgian creative excellence, showcasing its model to an international audience of industry leaders, artists, and innovators.
Much like its evolution over the past decade, this activation is not about visibility, it is about influence. It positions Daft as part of a new generation of creative institutions that operate across borders, disciplines, and industries.
A Decade In, and Still Building
The 10-year anniversary represents the validation of a model that once seemed unconventional. This milestone underscores a broader evolution: from an experimental concept to a recognized creative institution within Europe’s music and cultural landscape.
Like all meaningful creative platforms, Daft continues to evolve. Its first decade has been about proving a concept: that a studio can be a destination, that environment shapes output, and that creativity benefits from space, both physical and mental. The next chapter points outward.
From the Ardennes to London and beyond, Daft is expanding its reach while staying rooted in its founding philosophy. In doing so, it offers a compelling blueprint for the future of creative work, one where place, experience, and production are no longer separate, but indivisible.
